A former supermarket worker who plotted to assassinate the late Queen Elizabeth II was sentenced to nine years in custody - but was told he will remain in hospital until he is deemed fit enough to go to prison.

Jaswant Singh Chail, 21, scaled the perimeter of the Windsor Castle grounds with a nylon rope ladder on Christmas Day 2021 armed with a loaded crossbow while wearing a metal Star Wars-inspired mask.

He wandered the castle grounds with the weapon for two hours before he was stopped near the late monarch's private residence - where she and other family members were at the time - telling a police officer: "I am here to kill the Queen."

Chail had described himself as a "Sith" and "Darth Chailus" in a sinister video and confided his plan to murder the monarch to an artificial intelligence-generated "girlfriend", who had responded to him.

He had previously unsuccessfully applied for positions within the Ministry of Defence Police (MDP), the British Army, the Royal Marines, the Royal Navy, and the Grenadier Guards in a bid to get close to the Royal Family.

Chail, who is of Indian Sikh heritage, formed a plan to assassinate the then Queen to avenge the Amritsar massacre of 1919, which was carried out by soldiers commanded by British colonial forces.

He was encouraged by a female artificial intelligence chatbot called "Sarai", which he created on an application called Replika, exchanging more than 6,000 messages with it.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to injure or alarm the Queen under the Treason Act, as well as possession of an offensive weapon and making threats to kill.

Sentencing judge Mr Justice Hilliard heard evidence from three psychiatrists to help him decide whether Chail - who has been held at Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital - should be jailed or handed a hospital order under the Mental Health Act.

He sentenced Chail to nine years with a further five years on extended licence.

Under the hybrid order, Chail will be transferred from Broadmoor psychiatric hospital to serve his sentence in prison when he is well enough.

Passing sentence at the Old Bailey in central London, the judge said: "The defendant harboured homicidal thoughts which he acted on before he became psychotic," the judge said.

"His intention was not just to harm or alarm the sovereign - but to kill her."

In the world of Air Crash Investigation, some of the most crucial pieces of evidence can be found inside an airplane’s flight recorders. Having a recording from on board an aircraft ready to be retrieved to tell the events of an ill-fated flight is invaluable to any investigation. They can tell some remarkable things, and sometimes investigators can get a whole lot more than they bargained for. We’ll be talking about one such case today.
When you think of the term Flight Recorder, two different objects may come to mind. There’s the Flight Data Recorder which records various parameters and technical data about a flight, and then there is the Cockpit Voice Recorder, which does exactly what it sounds like. One or more microphones positioned in the flight deck recording the conversations of the pilots.
Together these two items, though they are known colloquially as “Black Boxes” they are typically coated in bright orange. Done so to stand out amongst plane wreckage or at the bottom of the sea. As you’d expect therefore, given the sensitive nature of the voice recorder’s content, these aren’t always released to the public unlike say accident reports or photographs.
Sometimes they are for various reasons if it is in the public interest, some countries have been known to release these recording more liberally than others. In other cases the recordings themselves are withheld but they are transcribed.
Today though we are going to look into the case of Braniff International Airways Flight 352. This is a rather rare case of an air accident. Where though the disaster took place 55-years-ago and for almost all of that time the cockpit voice recording was kept from the public, just two months ago at time of recording this video, it surfaced. Though the recording was withheld, I’d say having looked into it, I’d describe it more as lost.
In remarkable circumstances it was only re-discovered recently and publicly released. And there is a story there, which we’ll get to later. This is one of the oldest Cockpit Voice Recordings to ever surface from a crash. The recording sheds further light into that flight deck of 55-years-ago.
What we are about to unearth and breakdown here today, are the events leading up to a fatal catastrophe that could so easily have been avoided and with the help of this recording, we’ll piece together why.

There are about 300 million planets in our galaxy alone that might support life as we know it. By the sheer number of these planets it can be argued that we are most likely not unique in the galaxy. Brian Cox thinks that there must be intelligent civilizations out there, although they might be extremely rare when we consider the rise of intelligent life here on Earth.

Imagine intelligent civilizations are prevalent throughout the lifespan of the galaxy. There had to be a first civilization. Asking: Are we alone? Only in their case the answer would be, yes. But maybe, that civilization is us.
