In the world of Air Crash Investigation, some of the most crucial pieces of evidence can be found inside an airplane’s flight recorders. Having a recording from on board an aircraft ready to be retrieved to tell the events of an ill-fated flight is invaluable to any investigation. They can tell some remarkable things, and sometimes investigators can get a whole lot more than they bargained for. We’ll be talking about one such case today.
When you think of the term Flight Recorder, two different objects may come to mind. There’s the Flight Data Recorder which records various parameters and technical data about a flight, and then there is the Cockpit Voice Recorder, which does exactly what it sounds like. One or more microphones positioned in the flight deck recording the conversations of the pilots.
Together these two items, though they are known colloquially as “Black Boxes” they are typically coated in bright orange. Done so to stand out amongst plane wreckage or at the bottom of the sea. As you’d expect therefore, given the sensitive nature of the voice recorder’s content, these aren’t always released to the public unlike say accident reports or photographs.
Sometimes they are for various reasons if it is in the public interest, some countries have been known to release these recording more liberally than others. In other cases the recordings themselves are withheld but they are transcribed.
Today though we are going to look into the case of Braniff International Airways Flight 352. This is a rather rare case of an air accident. Where though the disaster took place 55-years-ago and for almost all of that time the cockpit voice recording was kept from the public, just two months ago at time of recording this video, it surfaced. Though the recording was withheld, I’d say having looked into it, I’d describe it more as lost.
In remarkable circumstances it was only re-discovered recently and publicly released. And there is a story there, which we’ll get to later. This is one of the oldest Cockpit Voice Recordings to ever surface from a crash. The recording sheds further light into that flight deck of 55-years-ago.
What we are about to unearth and breakdown here today, are the events leading up to a fatal catastrophe that could so easily have been avoided and with the help of this recording, we’ll piece together why.

August 22nd, 1985 — British Airtours Flight #28 is taking off from Manchester Airport for the Greek Island of Corfu. As the aircraft is accelerating, a loud ‘thud’ emanates from the fuselage, and the pilots abandon takeoff. They believe a tire has blown, but passengers on the left side of the plane see the real problem — one of the engines is on fire. Within seconds, thick black smoke fills the cabin, panicked passengers struggle to escape, and just six minutes later, the aircraft is completely ravaged by fire. 55 people die. Can investigators determine how a minor emergency turned into one of the worst disasters in British aviation history?

EgyptAir Flight 990 was on a routine flight when, en route to Cairo, the plane suddenly lost altitude and plunged towards the water. Tragically, the Boeing 767 slammed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, killing all 217 people on board. After the October 31, 1999 plane crash, the Egyptian government asked the American NTSB to handle the investigation. As investigators raced to find the cause, they had to consider every option. Was it a mechanical failure, or an intentional human maneuver that caused the plane to crash?

There are about 300 million planets in our galaxy alone that might support life as we know it. By the sheer number of these planets it can be argued that we are most likely not unique in the galaxy. Brian Cox thinks that there must be intelligent civilizations out there, although they might be extremely rare when we consider the rise of intelligent life here on Earth.

Imagine intelligent civilizations are prevalent throughout the lifespan of the galaxy. There had to be a first civilization. Asking: Are we alone? Only in their case the answer would be, yes. But maybe, that civilization is us.

Professor Brian Cox is often called the poster boy of Particle Physics. He’s a Professor at Manchester University but is best known for his down-to-earth explanations of very complex questions about the universe.

He’s taught us physics in documentaries, TV shows, and many children’s programmes, making science accessible to millions. He has been working on the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider for many years. The project discovered the Higgs Boson, or The God Particle, in 2012.

Later this year, Brian will return to his arena tours with Horizons: a 2021 Space Odyssey, a cinematic journey through the story of how we came to be using state-of-the-art LED technology.
